Don’t use a picture to give a total score to a tool
A beautiful landscape picture cannot prove that the same tool can write Chinese correctly, can make the same character appear continuously, nor can it prove that it can retain product details. Before choosing a image tools, consider what kind of pictures you will deliver most often in the future.
Chinese, character, and product pictures should be tested separately, because the failure methods are completely different.
Group 1: Look up Chinese posters first
Let each candidate generate a horizontal event poster with just two lines of text: "Weekend Book Exchange" and "September 6th at 14:00." Don’t start with a long art description, start with the most basic writing skills.
- Are there any typos, duplications or deformations of Chinese characters?
- Are the numbers, colons and spaces correct?
- When changing a date, will other text and images change together?
- Is the export size sufficient? Can the wordless version be retained for later typesetting?
The official description of ChatGPT Images currently lists the ability to add text, partial editing, and transparent backgrounds, but the actual Chinese effect still needs to be tested with your copywriting. If the poster text must be 100% correct, a safer approach is usually to first generate a wordless base map and then type it in the design software.
Group 2: Three character pictures should be generated in a row
Prepare a reference picture of a single person that you have permission to use, and let the tool generate three pictures of standing frontally, holding a book sideways, and sitting by the window. Don’t just ask “does it look like it?”, check also:
- Whether face shape, hairstyle, age and main clothing are continuous;
- Whether fingers, glasses and accessories are deformed after changing movements;
- When the characters are the same, can the background and composition be changed as required?
- Will the second partial modification replace the correct face again?
Midjourney's character reference notes also caution that real characters may not be accurately reproduced, and complex details such as freckles and markings may change. When continuous roles are required, reference pictures and clear text descriptions must be used together, not just "keep the same person".
Group 3: Product pictures preserve the product itself first
Product images should not be generated out of thin air from pure text. Upload a photo of your own product and change it to three backgrounds: light desktop, kitchen and outdoor, while retaining the product itself.
- Whether the brand name, packaging text, buttons and interfaces have been changed;
- Whether product proportions, colors and materials remain accurate;
- Do shadows, reflections and contacts look like they are really there;
- Can we just redo the background without reinventing a product?
Adobe Firefly and Photoshop currently provide stylistic, structural, or object reference drawings to guide generation, and also allow adjustment of reference strength. The reference function can improve directional consistency, but the product page still needs to check the packaging and structure item by item; a small change may make the picture no longer represent the real product.
Finally, choose the pictures you make most often.
- Only doing atmospheric pictures and concept illustrations: Prioritize the quality and style selection of the first picture.
- Making a poster with text: Prioritize the accuracy of the text and partial modifications, and leave the typesetting to the design software if necessary.
- When working on sequential characters: Prioritize reference picture control and consistency across multiple pictures.
- When promoting products: give priority to partial editing, reference pictures, and retaining details. Don’t replace reality with beauty.
Each group is generated three times, and the number of directly usable sheets, number of modifications, and quota consumption are recorded. A truly useful tool is not to give you a surprise picture every once in a while, but to have fewer failures, be able to make changes easily, and be able to export as required on the types of pictures you work on most.
